How Much Does Artificial Turf Cost Installed? (2023)
Have you considered artificial turf for your residence or commercial property? Interested in saving money on water, maintenance services, or just want a fantastic looking yard?
Going artificial can solve those problems but how much dose it cost? The answer you probably don’t want to hear is “IT DEPENDS”. Just to give a little back story I am a landscape contractor in Northern CA, specifically in the Central Valley. So, everything I share here will most likely be on the higher end of the scope in terms of overall cost depending on where you live.
With that said, here are 3 installation examples and check list of things that can raise a overall Square Foot Price.
1. Standard Turf Installation 🏡
This job was in Valley Springs CA.
Price Tag $23,280
This job included a 3 inch removal of the sod/ soil, 125 feet of aluminum edge, gopher guard, capping irrigation/ installing bubblers for the trees, 2 1/2 inches of base rock, Pacific Fescue Turf BY Heavenly Greens, and 3 pounds of silica sand per square foot.
Lets break down the numbers ...
This job was 1,455 Sq. feet so for the quick math peeps out there, that's $16 a Sq. Ft. That is on the low end of pricing and mostly because of the size. It was a decent size job also remember this included gopher guard and that guard is fairly pricy.
A job this size will take 3-4 days for a experienced crew to install.
This job was in Modesto CA.
Price Tag $19,500
This job included a 4 inch removal of the soil/ sod, capping irrigation, 6 inches of base (more or less), gopher guard, pro green materials, Coronado flu thru fringe, 5 PGA holes, 8 pounds of PGA sand per square foot, several breaks added in, we bring a 1000 pound roller to roll a grain. Goal is 12-14 on the Stimp Meter.
As you can see a PRO Green gets pretty complex to have done right!
Lets break down the numbers a bit...
This job was a total of 730 square feet. so that means $26.71 per square foot installed. This price tag might sounds a little scary and yes I understand. The Pro style greens are not as common because they are incredibly challenging to install and very few even attempt it. Just note this is not the putt putt land spongy stuff you might of seen already. This is more on the Pro Level for avid golfers that want to get better at their putting game in the comfort of their home.
A job this size will take 2-3 days for a experienced crew to install.
This job was in Roseville CA.
Price Tag $14,836
This job included a 5 inch removal of the soil/ sod, capping irrigation, 3 inches of a Class 2 clean base, 1 inch airdrain tiles ( underground airflow), a flow Thru turf ( drains like a coffee filter), and 3 pounds of a antibacterial infill.
Lots of people think a short turf with antibacterial infill makes a pet job but it is NOT true ( in my opinion)
The Goal is High Draining abilities. The reality is you can have antibacterial infill but if the water cant drain and turf dry then its is useless and that's when you hear the horror stories of smell.
Lets break down some numbers...
This job was 636 Square feet so that means $23.32 per square foot!
I hope at this point you are starting to see that depending on what type of install you get can really determine the project cost. Its not as simple as remove some dirt add some base and lay the turf (at the Pro level).
A job this size will take 1-2 days for a experienced crew to install.
The amount of removal needed
Root or debris removal (must get the organic material out of the area in question)
Type of edging needed or required ( always go metal)
Bubblers for trees or flower beds in the center of the turf
Type of bases and amount needed ( different bases are for different jobs)
Gopher guard
Turf you choose ( some turfs might be required for specific jobs)
Type of infill needed ( we always do double the industry standard for perspective)
In 2022 I had 150,000 Square feet of turf sold/ installed! 189 jobs
Some jobs were a few thousand and my largest job over $200,000. Most jobs run from $15 - $20 a square foot installed. Having said that My Average Square Foot Price was $18.
I hope this gives you a better idea how much your job can cost. A good rule of thumb is if you have your square footage just use a $15 - $20 price point and you should be good to have a really good idea of what it might cost.
Example- 10 feet wide x 30 feet long = 300 Sq Ft (price point $4,500 - $6,000)
Thank You
